Filipino-Chinese George Tanlimco, Jr., a senior high school student from the Chiang Kai Shek College (CKSC) was named one of the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts (TOBS) in the country.
The 16-year-old crew leader of the Troop 88 was shocked when he was proclaimed one of the top scouts in the country which he shared with other 9 deserving boy scouts from other regions.
“I was shocked. It has always been my dream to be one of the TOBS, but I never expected I would get the award,” said Tanlimco.
Tanlimco started as out can scout when he was in Grade 1 in CKSC where he sharpened his leadership skills and widened his awareness in community service.
“I learned so many things as a boy scout. We were taught practical lessons and received an informal education outside the classroom,” Tanlimco said.
“We were exposed to different things not familiar to us in a home or classroom setting, and we were told to go beyond the daily routine,” he added.
Being on the prestigious list of top 10 Boy Scout is not that easy. Judges meticulously view and study nominated boy scouts from other countries before they come up with the 10 bests.
The national board of judges was composed of members of the national Boy Scout of the Philippines (executive board and the DepEd, as well as the TOBS of the Philippine Association.
The criteria for judging were: Performance in terms of community service, scholastic achievements, and scouting participation; character, where a candidate is expected to live up to the ideals of scouting, capability to observe religious obligations; and communication skills.
Aside from Tanlimco, other 9 awardees were Giancarlo Ventura of the Cagayan North-Tuguegarao Council; Pananalig Bautista of the Baguio City Council; Joshua Carlo Pile of the Bulacan Council; Patrick Dave Bugarin of the Rizal Council; Kevin Martin Faltado of the Batangas City Council; Leonard Joshua Peña of the Lipa City Council; Anthoddiemn Olin Navarro of the Negros Occidental Council; and Rhomeljustein Redoble and Ronald Rey Adalim, both of the Cebu Council.
