Tsinoy Whiz Kids Knock Down 9 Countries in International Tilt
Just before Manny Paquiao knock down Miguel Cotto, Filipino-Chinese students bested other country as they hailed the Philippine flag on the recent 6th Mathematics and Science Olympiad held in Jakarta, Indonesia last November 8-14, 2009.
The RP team gets gold, 6 silvers and 9 bronze medals compared to last year’s competition where Philippines received only 14 medals.
Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematic Trainers’ Guild-Philippines (MIT) said that the lone gold medalist was Adrian Reginald Sy a grade 5 student from Saint Jude Catholic School Manila.
The RP team battled with other math and science whiz kids of Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, South Africa, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Hong Kong and India.
Each 12 contenders for the Math category each won a medal. The silver medalists for the math division are Jason Joseph Fernandez of San Beda-Alabang, Prince Michael Balanay of Colegio de San Agustin-Biñan, John Thomas Chuatak and Nathaniel Joshua Balete of St. Stephen’s High School-Manila and Andrew Lawrence Sy of Saint Jude Catholic School.
Bronze medalists from Math division are Farrell Eldrian Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy-Taguig, Benedict Ryan Chua Tiu of St. Stephen High School, Jasper Amadeus Opulencia of North Central School-Batangas, Andrei Triz Patupat of Holy Rosary College-Laguna, and Franz Patrick Villamor of City Central School-Cagayan De Oro and Emman Joshua Busto of Elementary School-Antipolo.
The silver medalists in science category are Diego Nathaniel Mina of holy Rosary College-Laguna, Allan Cedrick Domingo of San Beda College-Alabang and Caireen Tuppil of Placido del Mundo Elementary School-Quezon City.
The bronze medalists for science division are Gabriel Estampador of San Beda College-Alabang, Sarah Jane Macuja of Kidapawan Elementary School-General Santos City and Paul Carlo Diamond Salise of Cagayan de Oro.
