Para siyang si Mandy Moore na can do justice in both fields...music and acting. :p Nakakaaliw na pag nasanay ka na dun sa "comedy" roles niya tapos panonoorin mo yung mag shift siya into a serious role and be convinced with the character he's portraying, baka magawa niyo yung ginawa ko.....(i applauded in front of the tv!)nadala ako masyado ng emosyon eh....

Nakakatawa na nakakaaawa siya lalo na pag nakita niyo gaano kalaki yung needle! Tapos merong scene dun na yung lumabas na yung blood sa syringe, nag-iba yung facial expression tapos parang nasasaktan na siya pero ayaw pa rin niya ipahalata kaya he hid his face for a sceond then came out smiling again.

The new movie is about a girl who suffers from the delusion that she is a combat cyborg. Sectioned in a mental hospital, she falls in love with a boy who thinks he can steal people’s souls with a machine he has created.

The chief of Rain’s management company JVP Entertainment, Hong Seung-song, says the fledgling actor’s schedule was already booked up for the year. "The reason Rain decided to make his screen debut with the movie lies partly in the reputation of the director and partly in his intention to establish himself as an actor with this work," he said. Naaliw ako dun sa A LOVE TO KILL. For the first time, hindi ako nainis sa story…dati kasi pag merong part na nakakainis pino-forward ko na lang.



Friends….marunong ba mag sigarilyo si Bi? Nakakaaliw lang kasi na sa mga episodes na I’ve seen most of the time lollipop ang nasa bibig niya and for the times na he’s supposed to smoke a cigarette, hindi naman niya nasisindihan. Para tuloy props lang yung cigarette.

The local mandatory conscription system calls on all able-bodied men over the age of 20 to serve for two years. Celebrities are no exception.

Just as students defer their studies and office workers request extended leaves of absence from their employers, actors and singers too are expected to put their careers on hold.

A recent celebrity to do so is ``Taegukgi (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_movie_Taegukgi.php?PHPSESSID=ba5017693e1c88b3eda6e4f6192cb8fd): The Brotherhood of War'' star Won Bin (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Won_Bin.php?PHPSESSID=ba5017693e1c88b3eda6e4f6192cb8fd), who entered the 102nd Reserves in Chunchon, Kangwon Province last November.

Singers Kim Jong-kook and Jo Seong-mo and boyband Shinhwa member Eric Moon (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Eric_Moon.php?PHPSESSID=ba5017693e1c88b3eda6e4f6192cb8fd) are among those expected to be drafted in 2006.

With so many stars doing their service, many fans wonder what military life is like for their favorite celebrity.

While there are occasional cases like Won Bin (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Won_Bin.php?PHPSESSID=ba5017693e1c88b3eda6e4f6192cb8fd) who insisted on being treated like any other soldier, most apply for a post within the Defense Media Agency (DMA). In the agency, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Defense, they are assigned to the ``promotion support troop.'' There, they fulfill duties as what is called a ``yonye sabyong,'' which literally means ``entertaining soldier.''

Residing within the defense ministry grounds in a barrack no different from that of any South Korean soldier, the young stars must follow the same conduct codes applied to all.

The only significant difference in their everyday lives is the duties they are expected to attend to.

While soldiers spend their day training, they travel from one unit to another emceeing events and shows organized by the DMA, contribute in the making of infomercials and promotional movies. Some work as DJs and others as presenters or guests on the military channel Korean Forces Network (KFN).

Currently there a total 13 entertaining soldiers in the regiment, six of whom have experience in show business. But according to An Byong-o, the DMA's public relations department director, not all who apply are accepted as only when there is an opening are they able to join.

Currently, the unit is limited to a total of 13 men and a few of those places must be left open for staff who can provide technical assistance.

An also added that while there is a general assumption that putting celebrities in such posts is a form of special treatment, he said that this is not necessarily so. The everyday lives of entertaining soldiers is not easier nor is it less demanding than ordinary servicemen, he said.

``They undergo whatever difficulties and pressure any other soldier may experience. It just is that the nature of their duties differ,'' he said.

``Both the soldiers entertaining and those being entertained benefit from it.''

One of the non-celebrities in the promotion support troop is Sergeant Seo Jae-kyeong (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Seo_Jae-kyeong.php?PHPSESSID=ba5017693e1c88b3eda6e4f6192cb8fd), a 24-year-old film major from Seoul. He reports everyday on the set of KFN studios where he is an assistant director for one of the programs.

Suh said there is nothing special about having celebrities in the regiment. While there are the occasional run-ins that result from the hierarchy he added run-ins of this sort are not specific to them.

It is only when duty calls for them to make trips off base and people stop and ask for autographs he is reminded that to civilians his mates are celebrities.

``They politely turn them down. Because of the given circumstances they seem to want to keep low-profile,'' Suh said.

Hello everyone, sorry I've been really busy working a lot. I won't be able to attend the concert said enough for me because I heard about It too late and I don't live in NY. :cry

One more thing too.
There is a petition going for rain to be allowed some rest do to his extensive amount of non-stop work he's been doing all year. His schedule is full this year as well but before he gets started we think he should take some rest. He's always considerate of his fans health and now we want to watch out for his. He's losing weight, and working nearly all day between dramas and music etc. While working on ijuksa (A love to kill) he had dance practice, song practice, 6 hours straight of boxing practice, he had to jump rope to 500, and still practice his lines after even more training and that was everyday. He excercised every morning and night. He needs a break, we don't want him to overwork himself and pass out or anything. The new drama of Asian Heavenly King Rain, Ijuksa, will be airing in April on Star TV (Taiwan). For this, Rain especially made a short recording for Star TV viewers with a short New Year greeting liner, “Happy New Year to all Taiwanese viewers!” Rain also revealed that despite everybody calling him an adorable “big boy”, he is in fact, in love with his unshaven looks in Ijuksa, saying that it felt very manly and attractive in a masculine way!

Asia copyrights of the singer cum actor’s new drama has been bought by Star TV, and the station is planning to broadcast this drama in Taiwan in early April. Talking about this drama, Rain expresses that he has put in a lot of effort in his acting. Even the scriptwriter, Lee, who insisted on having Rain as the male lead actor commented that Rain’s acting skills have matured in this drama, and has deeply moved many who saw the drama. In order to differentiate himself from the his trademark sunshine smile, Rain insisted on using his own name, Jung JiHun, in credit rolls. He also loves his unshaven image in the drama.

During the shooting, the director and image consultant wanted him to change his image and appear in the series with a stubbled, wary look. Not only is this a requirement of the script, it is also to complement the theme of his advertiser. Rain joked that someone actually called him “Uncle” because of this image.

According to Rain, during the shoot, the image consultant told him that his eyes becomes really small when he smiles, hence giving him a very adorable look. In order to shed this adorable image, Rain tried to refrain from smiling during his shooting of this drama, so he can appear to be more macho.

However, he regrets that the rugged image of his character cleaned up quickly as the script proceeded, “Ah! It’s really regretful! I really liked this rugged, unshaven look! However, his “Rainy Day in Guangzhou Concert? originally planned to be on the 12th and 13th Feb this year was cancelled in the last minute.

The Guangzhou concert was supposed to be held in Tianhe Stadium, with tickets priced at 1600 yuan; 800 yuan; 400 yuan and 200 yuan respectively. The initial announcement of this concert aroused enthusiastic responses from fans all over the world. Unfortunately, shortly after the record company and the organizer sealed the contract, the record company reverted to say that the concert had to be cancelled. Apparently, there was a miscommunication between JYPE and the record company—there were no slots in Rain’s schedule to accommodate the concert at all. After several rounds of fruitless discussions with JYPE, it was decided that the concert had to be cancelled.

Rain has addressed this “Rainy Day in Guangzhou rumour?as early as last year during his trip to Hong Kong for the Pepsi Press Conference: “I haven’t heard about this, and there is no such intention (of holding this concert) up to this moment. My schedule is already packed until next year,?The concert was still pending at that time. The organizer was notified later that the concert could not materialize. In another internet rumour at around the same time, Rain supposedly bought drugs at a night club in Vietnam. Rain and JYPE immediately filed reports with the Seoul Police Department on these two malicious rumours.

According to a JYP spokesperson, Rain is now a well-known artiste in the Asia region. This is a very crucial period for him, and having such groundless and untruthful rumours flying around can be immensely damaging to his image. Hence, they cannot ignore the existence of these rumours and will be taking serious legal actions towards the issues.

On the other side, the legal representative of JYPE states that they cannot reveal any details about the case now as it is currently under investigation, and emphasized his stand to take approach this issue seriously.

Singer Rain to Bring His Asian Fan Clubs Together at Concert in Thailand

Singer Rain will bring together his fan clubs throughout Asia at a concert in Thailand.

Members of Rain's fan clubs in seven Asian regions--Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Indonesia--will attend Rain's concert called "Rainy Day-Taipei" to be held at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on Feb. 25 and 26.

Rain will distribute VIP tickets to members of his fans from Asian regions other than Korea and Japan. Previously, he gave such premium tickets chiefly to his fans in Korea and Japan.

Meanwhile, Rain's agency jyp Entertainment will distribute VIP seats by drawing, since many fans want seats close to the stage. Rain will randomly select seven balls representing the Asian regions one by one to determine the order of priority of the seats.

The drawing will be conducted during Rain's first solo concert in the United States. His drawing of the balls will be recorded during his concert entitled "An Evening with Rain" at Madison Square Garden in New York on Feb. 2. The recorded film will be released on Websites of the seven Asian regions afterwards.

His upcoming concert in Thailand will be a prelude to his launch of a pan-Asian fan club comprising about 200,000 members he is planning for this autumn.

Not as good as expected

S'pore sales of K-pop star's album not on par with his overwhelming popularity.

Rain is indisputably the hottest K-pop phenomenom in Asia

Yet, the 24-year-old hunk has possibly made more headlines elsewhere than he has sold CDs here.

His album, It's Raining, shifted all but 5,000 copies when it was launched here last August.

A far cry from an initial estimate of 15,000 by his record company, Universal Music, and a low figure considering the advertising dollars that went into the three-month publicity campaign for the album.

What went wrong?

Why is Rain's CD sales not on par with his overwhelming popularity, as seen in an avalanche of media reports and a rapidly-expanding local fan club boasting 2,000 members?

When queried by The New Paper, Universal Music's brand manager, Miss Connie Low admitted that his sales figures were "okay, but could be better".

"Our marketing efforts pushed him to fame, but that did not translate into as much sales as expected," she conceded.

"But he is still our priority artisted and we will continue to promote him."

In retrospect, she pointed out that Rain would have made a bigger impact if he had come to Singapore for promotions.

That Korean music still appeals to a niche group and the language barrier makes it less readily accepted than J-pop
- which at least has Chinese characters
- is also an obstacle yet to be conquered.

Tokyo-based K-popster BoA, for instance, can easily sell over 7,500 copies of her Japanese releases, but only half for her Korean albums.

Even the heavily-markedted Lena Park sold only 7,500 copeies after her promotional trip to Singapore.

But Rain's lukewarm sales could also be the fault of his overzealous hardcore fans, who go online to order his albums from Korea instead of waiting for the Singapore version.

One of them is executive secretary Stephanie Loh, 33, an active member of the Rain Singapore fan club.

"Most of us are kiasu and we don't know if Singapore would bring in the albums, so we'd rather go online and order first," she said.

Miss Loh has also placed orders online for Rain's upcoming Japanese debut single, Sad Tango, for herself and 40 other fan club members.

This CD marks Rain's ambitions at conquering the Japanese market.

Incidentally, Sad Tango was first heard on radio last month, but Miss Low said it was pulled off the airwaves after two days when Rain's Korean managers discovered that some Singaporean fans had copied the song and posted it online.

The CD itself is slated for release here on Wednesday. Priced at $26, it includes two songs (Sad Tango and Slowly), a bonus DVD comprising a music video, a making-of clip, a message from Rain to fans and a free poster.

But isn't the price tag a little hefty for a CD single?

Comparatively, J-pop queen Ayumi Hamasaki's latest album, (miss)understood, which comes with 16 new tracks and a bonus DVD including 10 music videos, retails at around $20.

Miss Low said the price was fixed by Rain's management company, but "we're confident that hardcore fans will buy it because the heat is on".

Fans like Miss Loh, however, are not so sure.

Asked if she would buy the local CD, she replied: "It depends on what goodies are included. I don't need another copy that is exactly the same."

Looks like fans are becoming more rational and record companies would have to work hard to woo them.

MTV introduces Rain to US

The foreign media have recently introduced singer Rain, who is scheduled to perform at the New York Medison Square Garden Theater Feb. 2-3 in the United States.

Rain recently gave phone interviews to The New York Times and The New York Post. The two newspapers asked the singer about his childhood, family, his collaboration with producer Park Jin-young and his influence on Rain's career, the singer's future plans, his roles in TV dramas, and his secret to gaining popularity throughout Asia.

Prior to his concert, Rain and Park will give a two-hour interview on Feb. 3 at MTV's Total Request Live studio located in Manhattan, New York. The interview will be held in a transluscent glass studio so that the singer's fans can watch it as it records.

Held at MTV's request, the interview, entitled "Rain Special," will be broadcast throughout the entire American region via MTV News, the Chinese-language broadcaster MTV CHI and MTV K. MTV International will later air the interview worldwide.

Rain's agency, JYP Entertainment, reported Jan. 24 that top American stars will appear as guests at Rain's New York concert. The agency also added that tickets to the concert have already been sold out amid attention from globally renowned record firms, advertisement agencies and the mass media.

Rain is currently promoting his first single "Sad Tango," and will leave for the United States Jan. 31.

PRETTYSARA: I got the idea from my friend's and her "F4" friends. There was this album that Vic launched in other states kaya lang not here in the Philippines coz wala daw naging demand for it. So what they did was they took turns calling SONY Phils (the distributor) convincing them to launch the album here too...and you know what? it paid off. Accdg. to SONY if the first time they launched selling a foreign artist here and the sale was not good chances are they wouldn't include the Philippines for it's next album launch. When i went to RadioCity days ago they have still on-sale yung "it's raining and rain's soundtrack" pero sa odyssey and tower (south side, atc and southmall respectively) wala ng stock non. Tapos when i asked RadioCity if they have the newest album they weren't told of a new album so i had to tell them pa (they will call MC (the distributor, i guess they mean MC UNIVERSAL?!) about the new album. Siguro it will help din if Rain's fans here will ask the music stores bout it in that way, they can ask the distributor and then they will know there is a demand for it here.

Rain’s new single takes 11th spot on Oricon chart

The first single album from singer Rain, entitled “Sad Tango,” took the 11th spot on the Japanese Oricon chart on the day of its release Jan. 25.

A number of top Japanese artists released their new albums on the same day, including Gackt, B'z, Koda Kumi and Koto Maki.

“Sad Tango,” the album’s title track, was co-written by Bang Shi-hyuk and Rain’s producer Park Jin-young. Tokyo Broadcasting System’s music show “CountDown TV” chose it as its ending theme song, while the song’s music video, featuring Rain dancing in a black cloak fluttering in the wind, has received a favorable response from both Korean and Japanese fans.

Rain is currently promoting his single in Japan.

Meanwhile, Oricon’s single chart was topped by B’z, while Gackt took the third spot. BoA’s new single, entitled “Everlasting” and released Jan. 18, ranked 18th.

A strong forecast for Korean pop's Rain

Rain, a Korean pop star, actor and pan-Asian heartthrob, is preparing for two concerts at Madison Square Garden this week by studying. Day and night, an English tutor trails him through Seoul, peppering him with conversational phrases as he labors to polish his singing, his martial arts-inflected dancing and, presumably, his chest baring.

You can never be too prepared to go global.

At 23, Rain, who has been labeled the Korean Justin Timberlake and the Korean Usher, is a serious and driven performer (with washboard abs, winsome looks and a Gene Kelly-like ability to leap through puddles while performing his hit song, "It's Raining"). He wants nothing less than to break down barriers, build cultural bridges and become the first Asian pop star to succeed in America.

"The United States is the dominant music market," he said through an interpreter in a recent phone interview from Seoul. "I would really like to see an Asian make it there. I would like that Asian to be me. That's why I'm studying the language, reading up on the culture and practicing every day to correct my weaknesses."

Since his debut in 2002, Rain, whose real name is Ji-Hoon Jung, has been riding what is known as the Korean Wave. As South Korean products, from cellphones to the music known as K-pop, have swept across Asia, Koreans have coined a new term, hallyu, to describe the phenomenon. Through his leading roles in soap operas and his music, Rain has become the personification of hallyu, which some see as a high-quality regional alternative to American cultural dominance.

Rain is inspired by American pop music, but his interpretations provide, at the least, an Asian face and filter. His producer, Jin-Young Park, describes Rain's music as more "sensitive and delicate" than American R&B and says that his choreography is crisper and more precise, influenced by classical dance and martial arts.

"In Rain, Asians might see the spirit of Usher or Timberlake or even Michael Jackson, but he makes the music theirs," said Nusrat Durrani, senior vice president and general manager of MTV World. "He is a huge star in the making, but, at the same time, he is a very indigenous artist and a source of local pride."

Last year, Rain sold out arenas across Korea, China and Japan, playing to more than 40,000 in Beijing and 20,000 in the Budokan in Tokyo. America, with its growing interest in Asian popular culture, from Pokemon to Bollywood, was the obvious next frontier.

But Park - a 34-year-old impresario who is Rain's Henry Higgins - said that Rain will be not be officially ready to cross over until approximately October. That, according to a meticulously devised business plan, is when he is expected to achieve basic fluency in English, to release an English-language album and to smite the hearts of American young women.

The performances at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Thursday and Friday are merely a prelude. "This is for the American music industry," said Park, "basically introducing Rain, giving a taste, and everybody is coming."

Most of the 10,000 people coming, however, will need no introduction. Like Julie Cho, 25, vice president of the Young Korean American Network in New York, who considers Rain "a really good dancer" and "very humble," they are already fans.

Immigrants or children of immigrants, they live in an era when technology makes it easy to connect with their homeland. Small-time entrepreneurs have long catered to the immigrant appetite for culture from back home. But what used to happen on a neighborhood level - a Colombian dance troupe at a Queens community center - is now taking place on a much larger scale. Like Rain, foreign artists are filling mainstream venues, their fans primed by the songs, videos, television shows and films that are ever more accessible through the Web, satellite television and new media outlets targeting hyphenated Americans.

Thus, word spread very quickly through New York's Korean community that a Korean pop star was coming to town. "There is definitely a sense of Rain-mania washing across the 32nd Street land here in Manhattan," Minya Oh, a D.J. on New York's Hot 97 radio station, said, referring to the city's small Koreatown.

This is not Rain's first performance in the United States. He played at a Korean festival at the Hollywood Bowl last year, and Susan Kim, a sociologist in Los Angeles, regrets that she missed the show.

She and her American-born children discovered Rain, whom they refer to by his Korean name, Bi, on a Korean music Web site called Bugs. Then they sought out videos of a Korean mini-series, "Full House," in which Rain plays a pop star.

As of this month, "Full House" became available with English subtitles on New York cable, too, through ImaginAsian TV, which bills itself as America's first Asian-American network.

And soon, Rain's music videos will find a platform on MTV-K, a channel catering to Korean-Americans that will begin later this year.

MTV-K will feature a diverse array of Seoul music, including hip-hop artists like M.C. Mong, boy bands like HOT and melodic harmonizers like SG Wannabe (the SG stands for Simon and Garfunkel).

Inevitably, non-Asian Americans are discovering such easily accessible foreign culture, too. Because of the "multidirectional flow of cultural goods around the world," there is a "new pop cosmopolitanism," according to Henry Jenkins, professor of comparative media studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In an essay in "Globalization" (University of California Press, 2004), Jenkins writes that "younger Americans are distinguishing themselves from their parents' culture through their consumption of Japanese anime and manga, Bollywood films and bhangra, and Hong Kong action movies."

Indeed, Michael Hong, chief executive officer of ImaginAsian Entertainment, said that 60 percent of those who watch his company's Asian channels are not of Asian ethnicity. Similarly, at his company's two-year-old East 59th Street movie theater in Manhattan, which shows only Asian films, 70 percent of the audience is non-Asian.

"There is a great deal of interest in Asian content right now," said Hong, who helped set up and promote the Madison Square Garden concert. "Rain is just the tip of the iceberg." In the recent interview, Rain said that he had been dreaming about Madison Square Garden since he was a child imitating Michael Jackson's moves. "It is an incredible honor to perform there," he said. And yet he is preparing himself for failure: "In the case that my music is not loved by the American people, I will work very hard to fix things and hope to please them the next time."

Park said he believed that other Asian pop stars have failed in the United States by trying "to impersonate what was going on here." He said that he and Rain wanted to avoid "being another couple of Asian dudes trying to do black music" by embracing their inner delicacy and letting their Asian-ness show.

The moment is ripe, Park said. "Every market has been tapped except for the Asian market, and that's 5 percent of America," he said. "That's our base. But I believe that we can move beyond that."

MTV introduces Rain to US (2006/01/24)



The foreign media have recently introduced singer Rain (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Rain.php), who is scheduled to perform at the New York Medison Square Garden Theater Feb. 2-3 in the United States.

Rain (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Rain.php) recently gave phone interviews to The New York Times and The New York Post. The two newspapers asked the singer about his childhood, family, his collaboration with producer Park Jin-young and his influence on Rain's career, the singer's future plans, his roles in TV dramas, and his secret to gaining popularity throughout Asia.

Prior to his concert, Rain (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Rain.php) and Park will give a two-hour interview on Feb. 3 at MTV's Total Request Live studio located in Manhattan, New York. The interview will be held in a transluscent glass studio so that the singer's fans can watch it as it records.

Held at MTV's request, the interview, entitled "Rain Special", will be broadcast throughout the entire American region via MTV News, the Chinese-language broadcaster MTV CHI and MTV K. MTV International will later air the interview worldwide.

Rain's agency, JYP Entertainment, reported Jan. 24 that top American stars will appear as guests at Rain's New York concert. The agency also added that tickets to the concert have already been sold out amid attention from globally renowned record firms, advertisement agencies and the mass media.

Rain is currently promoting his first single "Sad Tango", and will leave for the United States Jan. 31.

Rain is a self-flagellating superstar.



"He thinks he's not good at all," Mr. Park, who spoke from Los Angeles, said in flawless English. "He's always worried. He thinks he's not blessed or talented. He thinks people are being fooled, that it's an illusion. He wants to catch up to that illusion."

Rain's family was living in a one-room house in Seoul when Mr. Park and Rain first met. "There was something sad about him then, and there still is, something cool and gloomy," Mr. Park said.

That's how the stage name came about. "I was told that when I'm dancing I give off the feeling of a rainy day," Rain said, in a speaking voice that is deep and rich.

Rain said that he first discovered "the euphoria" of performing during a sixth-grade talent show, after which he tried to hang around some professional dancers in his neighborhood. But he said they treated him terribly, finally beating him up and stealing his winter jacket.



He went on to be rejected — he kept count — 18 times by artistic management companies. Again and again, he was told that he would never be "hot," that he was too tall and "too ugly," primarily because he lacked a "double eyelid." Without cosmetic surgery to create a fold above his eyes — a relatively common procedure, though one often decried as a capitulation to Western beauty standards — he could forget about a show business career in Korea, he was told.

By the time he presented himself for an audition at Mr. Park's performing arts academy, Rain was in a state of desperation. His mother was quite ill, and he himself had not been eating regularly.



Rain, then 19, gave the longest and most passionate audition he could muster, nearly four hours of singing and dancing. Mr. Park (who goes by the initials J.Y. or J.Y.P.) accepted him into the JYP Academy. "He had this hunger," Mr. Park said.

"That is true," Rain said. "I was literally hungry."

Mr. Park himself had made his debut in 1994 as a "crazy, lunatic hip-hop artist from the Ivy League" of South Korea. He was a bad-boy performer who wore see-through vinyl costumes, but he got away with being outlandish because he had graduated from a prestigious university, he said.



After finding high-powered backers for an entertainment management and production company, Mr. Park opened the academy in 1998. He aimed to discover and make stars, and Rain clearly had potential as well as need.

"As soon as I signed Rain, he asked me to help his mother and explained the situation," Mr. Park said. "I was like, 'Yo, get in the car.' We went to his house, and I saw his mom lying there on this cold floor. We got a big surgery done on her. But then she insisted on no more treatment. She wanted me to spend my money on her son. He would tell her, 'Yo, Mom, J.Y.P. has enough money to support both of us.' She passed away a year before he debuted."



After three years of training, Rain's first stage experience came as a backup dancer for Mr. Park. Mr. Park, who still writes all his songs, created Rain's first album, "Bad Guy," in 2002. With the second album, "Running Away From the Sun," Rain said that he began asserting himself in the realm of choreography. "By the time his third album came out in 2004, they stopped calling him little J.Y. and started calling me Rain's producer," Mr. Park said.



Soap operas are the engine of celebrity in Asia for Koreans, and so Rain's move into television was a calculated one. "We saw Korean drama flowing all over Asia," Mr. Park said. "I said to Rain, 'Since you know how to act, we should use this to make you go overseas.' As soon as his second TV drama, 'Full House,' exploded all over Asia, we went over to hit them with concerts."

In Rain's most recent soap opera, "A Love to Kill," he plays a martial arts fighter. To alter his physique for the role, he told Korean journalists, he was jumping rope 2,000 times a day and eating only chicken breast and mackerel.

This kind of discipline defines him. In addition to his acting, recording and some modeling, he is finishing a university degree in postmodern music. Although unable to attend many classes, he does all the homework, he said, plus studies not only English but Chinese and Japanese, too.

Mr. Park said that Rain was motivated by a sense of obligation to his late mother.

"He promised his mom that he was going to be the No. 1 singer in the whole world," he said. "That's why he never parties, never drinks, never goes out and practices hours every day."

It was Mr. Park who, with 20 CD's in his backpack, set their global journey into motion. He took off for Los Angeles and went door to door "being nobody." After a year, he got his first call, from Bad Boy, P. Diddy's entertainment company, expressing interest in one of his songs for the rapper Mase. After that, the collaboration with Americans began.



Mr. Park said he believed that other Asian pop stars have failed in the United States by trying "to impersonate what was going on here." He said that he and Rain wanted to avoid "being another couple of Asian dudes trying to do black music," by embracing their inner delicacy and letting their Asian-ness show.

The moment is ripe, Mr. Park said. "Every market has been tapped except for the Asian market, and that's 5 percent of America," he said. "That's our base. But I believe that we can move beyond that, and I believe that the American music industry needs to partner with us to make inroads into Asia, too."



Mr. Park said that it has been easier for him, working as a songwriter in the United States, than it will be for Rain since "songs don't have color." But Rain is convinced that he has crossover appeal based on his own informal market research: he had women — "real American women" — climbing all over him at a bar in Los Angeles last year.



At the end of the interview, Rain was asked if he took some pride in defying those naysayers who once thought he would never be "hot."

"Yeah, sure!" Rain answered in English, and then switched to Korean, leaving his female interpreter in a sputter of giggles.

"Um," she said. "He say, um: 'You have to come see me in my concert, and you have to be attracted to me!' "

In this late afternoon of today, 24th Jan, Rain is having a photoshoot session in a luxurious hotel overseeing the Tokyo Tower. Journalists from various magazines and other interviewing media came with Rain's favourite food, benefiting member of the working staff as well. Kahit naman pilitin nang ABS na i-over ang exposure kay Rain, I doubt they can afford to bring him here as many times as they did with F4 at baka isang araw lang if ever . Unlike F4, mag i-international na si Rain. His eye is on America, and not some cheesy promotional tour that only gives him big bucks. And unlike F4, hindi sya naiinsulto na all looks, no talent nang Time Magazine, kaya mahirap gawing cheap si Rain even if they try... Thank goodness!:D

January 29, 2006 -- RAIN REIGNS AS ASIA'S HOT USHER
As a teenager, Korean pop sensation Ji-Hoon Jung lived with his mom and younger sister in a single run-down room in Seoul.







His mother was dying of diabetes because the family had no money to buy medication. The small amounts they did have came from his father, who worked in a bakery in a town three hours away.

"I hated myself. I couldn't do anything for my parents," says Jung through an interpreter. But "those times made me stronger, more determined."

With the help of a Korean hip-hop legend, Jung transformed himself into "Rain" - a rags-to-riches R&B heartthrob who has conquered Asia, and now aims to take on America.

The singer - who cites Michael Jackson and Usher as his favorite musicians - makes his U.S. debut at two sold-out shows at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Thursday and Friday.

In 1998, Rain auditioned for Korean rap superstar J.Y. Park - Rain's mentor and songwriter - who remembers the singer as a hungry 17-year-old artist with "desperation" in his eyes.

"He was a tiger who was about to starve to death," says Park, who performed as J.Y.P. "He came from the poorest of the poor."



At his Seoul-based J.Y.P. Academy, Park trained Rain like an old-school talent for 3 1/2 years, schooling the young performer in music, dance, fashion, etiquette and even current affairs.

"For the first two albums, everyone called him 'Little J.Y.P.' and that pissed him off," says Park, who has composed music for Will Smith, Mase and Omarion. "Now people call me Rain's producer."

The muscular, 6-foot-3 singer - whose voice has received comparisons to Usher's - brings with him brooding good looks, martial-arts infused dance moves and a built-in Asian-American fan base.

Many of his fans here were won over by his appearances on the popular Korean soap opera "Full House," which first aired in 2004 and is now showing with subtitles on ImaginAsian TV - the 24-hour Asian-American network co-sponsoring Rain's two city shows.

Rain "is emblematic of the kind of interest and cross-cultural acceptance that is currently taking place with Asian culture," says ImaginAsian Entertainment CEO Michael Hong.

Rain's third album, "It's Raining," has reportedly sold more than 1 million copies in several Asian countries and territories, including Japan, China and Thailand, since debuting in 2004. He's become such a huge star in Asia that Pepsi recently anointed him the soft drink's main celebrity endorser in China.

For his Garden shows, Rain will sing mostly in Korean - with a smattering of basic English phrases such as "But I love you" and "Let the music control my body" - and dance to catchy arrangements of hip-hop beats, soulful R&B melodies and simple pop hooks.

Rain will perform not only in front of his thousands of adoring admirers, but also the U.S. music-biz execs he wants to impress. His first major American release, his fourth album, is due out in America this fall - and he hopes it will have the backing to succeed in a market that has almost entirely kept Asian singers out of the mainstream. "I'm a representative of Asian and Korean pop culture, so I'm excited," Rain tells The Post from Japan, where he's promoting two singles before and after his MSG shows. And "if I can't make it this time, I have the strength and power to make it someday."

"The Korean pop star and actor Rain is looking to make a name for himself in the United States."

The New York Times, one of the most prestigious newspapers in the United States, carried a two-page story in its Jan. 29 issue featuring Rain (23, real name: Jung Ji-hoon), who is preparing for upcoming concerts in New York, as well as on the hallyu (Korean Wave) boom.

Rain will give solo concerts at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York on Feb. 2 and 3--a first for an Asian entertainer.

Taking up the entire culture-leisure section and another page, the NYT's story focused on Rain's popularity in Asia and his being the top hallyu star. The NYT said, "Last year, Rain sold out arenas across China and Japan, performing to more than 40,000 in Beijing and 20,000 in the Budokan in Tokyo." The newspaper showed interest in whether he can make a name for himself in the United States as well. The NYT added, "He wants nothing less than to break down barriers, build cultural bridges and become the first Asian pop star to succeed in America."

The NYT also praised him, saying, "He is a huge star in the making, but, at the same time, he is a very indigenous artist and a source of local pride." In a recent phone interview from Seoul with the NYT, Rain said, "The United States is the dominant music market. I would really like to see an Asian make it there. I would like that Asian to be me." To attain this goal, Rain is currently receiving English language lessons. In the interview, Rain said he was planning to release an album in English sometime in October after learning the language to a greater extent.

The NYT said that Rain, who has achieved high popularity in China and Japan, is now targeting the American market. It added, "America is taking a growing interest in Asian popular culture, from Pokemon to Bollywood."

The American newspaper also introduced a personal story about Rain, who grew up in poverty. According to the newspaper, Rain's family was living in a one-room house in Seoul when singer/composer Park Jin-young and Rain first met. By the time he presented himself for an audition at Park's performing arts academy, Rain was in a state of desperation and his mother was quite ill. As soon as Park signed Rain, he asked the impresario to help his mother. But his mother reportedly said, "Please spend the money set aside for me on my son." She passed away a year before he debuted. Such a heart-rending background served as the prime motivation for his growth, said the NYT. In the interview, Park chimed in, "That's why Rain neither entertains himself nor drinks, but only practices several hours every day."

The NYT also gave a detailed account of how Asian pop culture is establishing itself in the United States quickly. According to the newspaper, boys and girls of Asian descent are emerging as the main consumer group of hallyu products. The Internet has allowed them to access music and performances from anywhere around the world. This has attributed to Asian-Americans' enthusiasm about Asian pop stars. The NYT added, "Most of the 10,000 people coming, however, will need no introduction." The organizers of the upcoming concerts said, "We estimate that more than half of those who have bought tickets are Chinese-Americans, and many Japanese-Americans have also bought tickets."

However, 60 percent of those who watch Asian channels of "ImaginAsian Entertainment," an Asian TV network in the United States, are not of Asian ethnicity. At the East 59th Street movie theater in Manhattan, which shows only Asian films, 70 percent of the audience is non-Asian. Thanks to "cultural globalization," non-Asian-Americans are discovering the easily-accessible Asian pop culture, too. This is why Rain's concert schedule was extended by one more day. "We originally planned to hold only one concert on Feb. 2. But we had to extend it to two due to the explosive response. Coveted seats were already sold out in just two to three days," said an official from the program agency.

It took a devastating death to give Rain's career life.
The Korean pop star, beloved in Asia for R&B music and TV roles, lost his mother to diabetes five years ago.
Asia's answer to Usher and Justin Timberlake steers clear of drink, drugs, girls and (seemingly) rest to focus on performing, a job made possible by the woman who sacrificed insulin shots and medical care so he could study his craft.
"I am 23," Rain, born Jung Ji-Hoon, says through an interpreter, "and I'm like the average boy who wants to hang with friends, have a girlfriend and sleep eight or 10 hours a day. But when my mother passed away, I made up my mind that someday I would be the top star in the world to honor my mom. I have no regret for this lifestyle."
J.Y. Park, the music star who discovered Rain when the teen lived with his family in a one-room home, adds of his self-denying prodigy, "Only monks, reverends and Rain live like that. That is why I think he can make it anywhere in the world."
The Asian Adonis ? whose rippled abs, chiseled arms and graceful 6-foot-3 frame flood fans with joy ? hopes to parlay his overseas success to the American music market. Last year, he was named top Korean artist at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan. His 20,000-ticket summer shows in Korea and Hong Kong sold out in a day.

Now on Thursday and Friday, Rain storms the stage at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. He also plans to release an English-language album later this year.
"History unfortunately suggests that Rain will have a hard road to climb," says Jeff Yang, an Asian-market expert for consumer-strategy firm Iconoculture. "Pop music is littered with Asian stars who have tried to cross over," among them Hong Kong's Coco Lee and Japan's Utada.
But, says Yang, the appeal of Asian stars is growing. "If Rain is well managed by his people, with his looks and charisma and idol qualities, he really could have enough to make a difference."
Back when he was just a droplet, Rain studied music, dance and fashion at Park's Seoul-based J.Y.P. Academy.
"He was 17 when he came in to audition," recalls Park, who has composed tracks for Mase, Will Smith and Omarion and writes all of Rain's music. "He just gave me this look of true desperation. I always go for that hunger ? it makes superstars. Since then, if I tell him to do something, it is always overdone in a good way."
Park partnered with financial guru Horace Madison, whose musical clients include OutKast and Usher, to release Rain's English-language album on their label, Bridge Records. Rain is studying English (as well as Chinese and Japanese), and says he has four songs already in the bank.
"There has been no Asian artist who has succeeded in the American music market," says Rain slowly, showing off his elementary English, "and I hope to be the one. I think this album is not merely just an album, but the ?" and here the translator jumps in, "The interchange of culture between Asia and America."

On why she's devoted, she explains, "He is different from big stars ? he seems more kind and polite. I also like his look. His body is well shaped and he's tall. Then there's his smile. His voice. The way he's dressed. Everything!"

MTV World to Showcase Korean Pop Superstar Rain With Its First Ever Live Music Production, 'MTV Presents: Rain - Live In New York'


NEW YORK, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- MTV World today announced plans to produce an exclusive live performance special featuring Korean pop superstar Rain on Friday, February 3 at MTV's Studios in Times Square. "MTV Presents: Rain - Live In New York" will provide the explosive superstar his first US opportunity to perform for and meet with his fans up close and personal, and the production also marks the first live music production for MTV World. Rain and his four dancers will perform exclusively for MTV World's cameras, and meet his fans in the studio audience during a question and answer period. "MTV Presents: Rain -- Live in New York" will air live on 44-1/2, the world's largest HDTV screen located across the street from MTV's studios in New York City's Times Square, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm (ET), on MTV K during its launch week and on MTV Chi in March.

The record label JYP has granted MTV World exclusive and unparalleled access to the artist, as MTV crews follow him as he prepares for one of the biggest performances of his life. K-pop star Rain dazzles N.Y. fans

Korean pop star Rain's debut concert in New York was a huge success with one of America's most influential producers, P. Diddy, showing up on stage to congratulate him at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

Sweat splashed off Rain, dubbed "Korea's Justin Timberlake," as he performed dazzling dance routines to an audience of 5,500 on the first night of his two "Rainy Day New York" concerts.

With all tickets sold out for the two nights, Rain, also known as Jung Ji-hoon, showed off his combined martial arts-dances, R&B vocal power and well-prepared English at the concert.

Rain's dynamic choreography and sexy gestures overwhelmed the audience most of whom were Asian American female teens.

Rain is the first Asian singer to hold a solo concert at Madison Square Garden where rock superstars such as Jonh Lennon and Elton John used to perform.

As Rain thanked his fans for their cheerful shouts and said "I love you," the audience replied "I love you, too."

After Rain sung a third song, "Handshake," Park Jin-young, the producer and mentor of Rain, introduced P. Diddy to the audience as a surprise guest.

On stage P. Diddy, previously known as Puff Daddy, celebrated the Korean singer's debut in the United States.

P. Diddy also said that he had chosen Rain to be the first Asian model for urban clothing line Sean John, the label that P. Diddy owns.

The African American rap artist is known to be working on a new album Park will join in producing.

Park, who planned Rain's New York concert, emphasized the meaningful encounter of "Asia and the United States" as he introduced P. Diddy to Rain's stage.

Rising American idol singer JoJo also climbed on the stage, saying that Rain's performance was fantastic.

Rain's New York concert has drawn media attention as a key test of whether he will be able to extend the Korean Wave, or hallyu in Korean, across the Pacific Ocean to touch another continent.

More than 100 local and foreign journalists thronged to cover the concert. In addition, MTV World is scheduled to air Rain's whole live performances on Friday through MTV-China and MTV-K across the United States.

He's got the abs. He's got the croon. And he can dance.

But does the South Korean pop star known as Rain have the right songs and image to be the first Asian-born singer to become an American idol?

Last night, the chiseled star made his first appearance in New York, at the 5,000-seat Theater in the Garden. And, if nothing else, he proved he already has a solid fan base among Asian-American girls in their late teens and early 20s. He has a strong enough hold on that screechy demographic to sell out two shows at The Theater (the other takes place tonight). This, despite the fact that not a single Rain CD in English has been released in this country. His debut arrives this fall.

Those with connections overseas, however, know Rain as the most popular, and spicy, thing out of South Korea since kimchi.

Certainly, the show had nearly enough of the requisite glitz for a modern pop spectacle. Rain brought with him a somewhat cut-rate version of the flames, sparklers, confetti and video imagery of a Western extravaganza. He also brushed up on his halting English - at least enough to learn the two most important phrases for a teen idol: "Make some noise" and "I love you."

Whenever he was stumped for what to say, which appeared to be often, he'd opt for the latter phrase, with winning results. Rain also made sure to pose and stroke his serpentine body as often as he sang.

To prove the seriousness of his crossover bid, he brought several American stars on stage. Sean (Diddy) Combs showed up just long enough to give props to Asian culture and to boost his own connection to an expanding market. The teen R&B star JoJo also forsook singing in favor of a little cross-promotion.

If that wasn't enough outreach, when it came time for Rain to dance with a girl from the crowd, he picked what might have been the only white kid in the place.

In his music, Rain kept things light and dewy. Like many Asian pop stars, he offers a softer version of American R&B, with a little Will Smith-level rap tossed in. Mostly, he croons in Korean, though there's the occasional American phrase.

Rain has often been compared to Usher and Justin Timberlake. But his music sounds less like their current work than their dated songs from the '90s.

If Rain really wants to make it here, he'll have to toughen his style and hire a hipper producer, on the order of Scott Storch or The Neptunes. Should his handlers bring this off, however, there's no reason Rain can't make girls of every race scream.

Rain, of course! Why did he chose the name? According to said fact sheet, it is because he likes rain (duh!). As the rain is ever-changing yet full of energy, he thought the noun expresses his personality and his music best.
Awards, which Rain has plenty from his singing career. He won the Most Popular Asian Artist award from Channel V Thailand last year and has over 10 awards as a actor in Korea.

ItsRAINing is the name of Rain's third solo album. Released in October of 2004, the collection of funky hip-hop and R&B fusion songs has been Rain's most succesful album and topped charts in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand and Taiwan the last summer.
Numbers, which we are sure that Rain's concert promoters are seeing a lot of! The singer's first two concerts in Hong Kong last year sold out in one hour despite ticket prices as high as HK$580. Local fans, despair not--Rain has planned a series of summer concerts this year, and one of the stops is Singapore. Rejoice!

sure justified :) here goes...mejo may sakit ako nun pero it was all worth it. 2 hours din kaming nakatayo kse sa moshpit kami. ang lapit din namin sa stage kaya kitang-kita namin sya. ang nag-open pala for him was Lim Jung Hee, yung kumanta ng Geh Deh Ji Geum sa Full House. anyway, ang first song na kinanta ni Rain was Bad Guy. nag-strip din sya with his 3 girl dancers pero syempre t-shirt lang meron ngang girl sa side namin na sumigaw "take it all off" in korean, natawa si Rain and pointed at her. and syempre nag-english din sya hahaha dun lang natalo pero okay lang si Rain yun eh. he performed "Nan" too yun yung scene na umulan sa stage. wala syang t-shirt nun tapos basang-basa pa sya hahaha. after he performed that song, nagsalita sya ulit he covered his naked wet body nahihiya yata or nilalamig. pag pumupunta sya sa side namin he would constantly look sa camera namin pano ba naman brother ko yung kumukuha ng pictures eh ang tangkad ng bro ko kaya nya siguro napapansin. lumabas din si Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and he announced na official model na si Rain ng Sean John and then um-appear din si Jojo. she praised Rain for being a great performer. siguro ang pinaka-highlights sa show nya was when he cried talking about his mom. he sang a song for her and dun sa background, yung screen sa likod nya, it said na they asked him if they could put pictures of his mom as a background while he was singing that song for her pero nakalagay na nung nasunog yung bahay nila wala daw natira kaya wala syang pictures ng mom nya. all he has is his memory of her in his heart. naiyak ako dun when i read that. the last song he performed was a remix of "I Do" ang gulo nga nila (him & his dancers) dun eh then merong mga confettis din. after the concert we went to McDo to eat then went home. the next day, i read in a forum na he & his dancers went to K-town to eat some korean food eh malapit lang yun sa MSG pero okay lang I got to see him naman. he's the 2nd asian (na hindi pinoy) artist na napanuod ko, 1st is Jay Chou.

Rain debut draws far from positive reviews (2006/02/06)



Rain (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Rain.php), Korea's pop singer whose influence is growing throughout Asia, finally showcased his talent for American audiences last week, but the reaction was far from positive.

Rain (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Rain.php), or Bi in Korean, performed at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Thursday and Friday, a new step for the "Korean Wave". Tickets for the both performances sold out, but local reviewers were not impressed by his act.

The New York Times, for one, noted that "Rain sounded like a nostalgia act", criticizing the absence of originality in his music style. The U.S. daily said Rain and his songwriter, producer and mastermind Park Jin-young have attempted to piece together styles of different artists - Michael Jackson, Babyface, Justin Timberlake, George Michael and Usher.

The problem is that" Rain"'s mimicking of Jackson's costumes and other popular American singers' styles did not generate a totally new trend that could upstage American audiences, even though he charmed mostly Asian female audiences last week.

"Rain (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_Rain.php) seems like a nice guy, but he doesn't have the tormented charisma of Jackson, the relaxed sex appeal of Usher or the quick pop reflexes of Mr. Timberlake", the paper said. The particularly painful judgment for Rain and Park is "Seeing him onstage was like watching old MTV videos dubbed into Korean".

But local media in Seoul hailed Rain's inroads into the U.S. market. Yonhap news agency reported in an upbeat note that the 24-year-old singer attracted 10,000 fans as well as hundreds of journalists during the two-day performances.

The performance is to be rebroadcast by MTV through local language services like MTV-Chi for Chinese and MTV-K for Koreans.

Local media also reported that major labels such as Sony Music, Universal Records and Warner Brothers Music are showing interest in Rain.

JYP Entertainment, the management agency to which Rain belongs, said it is in talks with major Japanese labels for Rain's record contracts.

The question is whether Rain will indeed move beyond the Asian market. He is the very symbol of the Korean Wave, a fad for Korean pop music, drama and movies. His third album released in 2005 sold a total of 920,000 copies throughout Asia, including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Indonesia.

Rain's live tour, titled "Rainy Day", stormed through Asian countries from July to December last year, attracting 130,000 fans in total, a new record for any Korean pop singer. Meanwhile, the television drama "Full House (http://www.hancinema.net/korean_drama_Full_House.php)" featuring Rain as a main character is winning over a growing number of Asian viewers.

People Interview: Rain's Mentor, JY Park

It has been a week since Rain's concert in Madison Square Garden. Despite the pre-concert excitement and post-concert criticisms, in general, people's expectation and beliefs in Rain's potential remain as before. Singer become producer JY Park discovered and nurtured "Rain". In October, reporters see the revenue of 35 million won generated by Rain. Below is the interview with JY Park, creator of this "Rain Syndrome".

Q: What are the various responses to Rain's debut concert performance in Madison Square Garden?
A: The performance in NY this time is really more to introduce Rain to potential working partners in the US, and not so much of a official entry into the US market. Reading too much into it is just adding burden on ourselves. The milestone is really his debut album to be released in this US in October this year. We're aiming at a sales figure of 500,000. By increasing his popularity through TV commercials, movies and collaborations with well-known American artistes, I believe this sales figure should be well on target.

Q: The article on the NY Times criticized the performance as unoriginal. Any comments on that?
A: I have no worries at all when it comes to Rain's performances and the music I write. I feel that the writer's innuendo of "can you do it as well as the Americans" is skewed away from an unbiased commentary. In addition, to be honest, the music that is well-received in Korea and Asia generally is slightly behind in terms of music style to that in the US. The appraisal on Rain's performance could have been affected by his prejudiced views on the music. Irregardless of criticisms, we are receiving overwhelming response from the records industry.

Q: What are some of the concrete development in plan?
A: It wasn't easy inviting the MDs and music people from renowned record companies like Island Def Jam, and they have given positive feedback on the performance. About three or four record companies have expressed interests in working together, proposing to set up a record company especially, focusing on Rain and introducing Asian music. We're also in the midst of negotiations on television commercials and movies.

Q: Rain is already very popular. Why does he absolutely need to go into the US market?
A: I must re-emphasize, this is a move to continue his popularity and development in Asia. One thing is for sure: next year, there may be a "China Rain". Although he may only have half of Rain's capabilities, the Chinese community is bound to give this "China Rain" more support. Korea was once crazy about the "New Kids On The Block". But after H.O.T came out, almost nobody (in Korea) showed attention to N'Sync, Backstreet Boys and other American boybands. Hence, we cannot just be contented with our current state. To achieve success in the most prestigious America stage is the only way for Rain to be recognized as the number artiste in Asia. In order to dominate the ever-expanding Asia market, breaking into the US market is a must.

JYP is not just the producer who create the phenomenal "Rain". He is also the producer of well-known US artistes such as Will Smith (Willard Christopher Smith). JY Park ventured into the US market for a reason. Two years ago, JY Park was renting a small room in L.A. With his CDs in a backpack, he knocked on the doors of more than 20 records companies in vain. Just as he was feeling hopeless, a record company called Executive Sony Music found him and asked him to do music arrangement for Will Smith's album. This was 11 months after he went to the US.

Q: Is to prove your abilities?
A: Haha...perhaps I just couldn't take it anymore. Honestly speaking, I was marketing myself in a typical Korean manner. Since I didn't have any chances to meet up with the high-level executives, I may as well give out my demo CDs to the office employees. Sometimes I order takeaways just to have a simple meal with them, and try to crack more jokes. After a while, I became popular among these people. Perhaps that's why the people in charge are willing to have a hear at my music.

Q: Some criticized that the music your produced for G.O.D and Park Ji Yoon are just replicas of the black R&B music.
A: The "black music" doesn't have solo-singing formats, because the music is simple, basic and straightforward. When people bring up such criticisms, I thought, "these people really have high expectations of me!" and I decided to go to the US. While I was on the plane, I thought "these people mean to tell me to do a good one. Well then, I shall go US and be the number one."

Q: As an artiste, you had many anti-fans, perhaps due to your straightforward personality.
A: The truth is, I never wanted to be someone whom the entire nation is in love with. I'm contented with half of the people saying things like, "that XX, what an ill-luck fellow!" but the other half thinking I'm not so bad. I wish I can be an artiste forever and still retain my original personality. Up till now, there are anti-remarks online saying things like, "JY Park, don't go disgracing Korea in US". Once I have time, I copy these remarks and read them on my laptop. Because to me, these remarks motivates me; they give me strength to go on. Do I sound perverted? Haha¡...

Q: Before going to the US, you were quite vocal about several social issues.
A: I haven't been reading the papers lately, and I've stopped learning new things for a while. This can't go on. Personally, I like capitalism, but I hate the way the capitalists monopolizes the way the world thinks. I have liberal opinions on topics like male chauvinism, census law systems, sex issues etc. Hence no matter whether it's the progressive or the conservatives in power, I'll still put up my oppositions with regards to these issues. The society believes in the strength of the spirit and neglects the importance of feeling with our body. To me, both the body and the spirit are important.

Q: Ever thought how it'll feel to be standing on Rain's stage?
Have I ever! Honestly, I envy Rain a lot. What I regret is that when I was a singer, there was no someone like JY Park (to guide me). If Rain firms his hold in the US, I'd like to release an album of my own in Korea.

Q: There were rumours some time back about Rain wanting to leave JYPE.
A: The relationship between Rain and me goes deeper than just working colleagues. We're on very good terms, so this is just meaningless gossips. Rain was once my disciple, and if I'm still a singer, he'll be my partner. We often discuss office issues together. Bringing a person to stardom is a kind of ability, but creating a megastar requires a humble, down-to-earth mentality. This is one area Rain cannot be faulted for.

Rain's contract with JYPE expires in May next year, and several Korean agencies are already eyeing to grab this hot property. Some are naming prices as high as a billion won in order to "seduce" Rain away from his mentor and producer, JY Park.

As of November last year up to now, Rain has reaped in up to NT170 million in endorsement revenue alone, certainly bringing in the big bucks for JYPE.

His contract with JYP ends May next year, and with regards to someone offering a billion for his disciple to leave him, JYP offers no opinion, but coolly commented that, "the most urgent task now is to help Rain break into the US market."

Park Ji Yoon ruined when she did not renew her contract

JY Park is also widely known as the "Godfather of Korean R&B". He started out as a singer, had released 6 albums during his singing career, and is also a great dancer. Owing to a lack of an outstanding appearance, he did not make it big as a singer, but became a producer later on. Park Ji Yoon, who was a very famous singer many years ago, was one of the artistes JY Park had groomed successfully.

However, words in the Korean entertainment industry said that Park Ji Yoon did not renew her contract with JY Park after she became famous. Hence, in the final album JY Park produced for her, he destroyed her career by deliberately giving her a terrible image with bad hair, and songs with lewd lyrics in the album.

Because of this album, her popularity dropped significantly, and had to turn to acting instead. If Rain has any intentions to leave JY Park, he would need to strategize his moves very carefully.
